Overview

John James is a Republican U.S. Representative from Michigan's 10th congressional district, serving since 2023. A former Army officer who served as an AH-64 Apache pilot with multiple tours in Iraq, James has a background in supply chain management and business. He is a West Point graduate and holds an MBA from University of Michigan. James previously ran for U.S. Senate in 2018 and 2020 before being elected to the House in 2022.

Career

James was elected to the House in 2022 with 51% of the vote against Democrat Carl Marlinga and re-elected in 2024 with 51.1% in a rematch. He has sponsored 18 bills during the current Congress, many in committee. Key legislative focuses include supply chain security, energy reliability, housing affordability, healthcare price transparency, child safety in schools, and veterans' education. He also announced his candidacy for Michigan governor on April 7, 2025.

Prior political experience

James won the 2022 House general election in Michigan's 10th congressional district against Democrat Carl Marlinga, receiving 51% of the vote. He was re-elected in 2024 in a rematch against Marlinga with 51.1% of the vote. James previously ran for U.S. Senate in 2018, winning the Republican primary with 55% before losing to incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow 52.3% to 45.8% in the general election. He ran again for Senate in 2020, losing to Democrat Gary Peters by 1.7% after initially refusing to concede and challenging the election results.
