Biography

Overview

John R. Curtis is a Republican senator from Utah serving since January 2025. He represents Utah in the U.S. Senate after previously serving in the U.S. House of Representatives for Utah's 3rd congressional district from 2017 to 2025, and as the 44th mayor of Provo from 2010 to 2017. Curtis is generally characterized as a moderate Republican and founder of the Conservative Climate Caucus.

Career

As a senator, Curtis wielded early influence by helping sink Matt Gaetz's nomination for Attorney General as a crucial opposition vote. In the House, he authored and championed multiple public lands bills that became part of the Natural Resources Management Act signed into law in 2019. He founded the Conservative Climate Caucus in 2021, which grew to 73 members. As Provo mayor, he maintained a 93% average approval rating and oversaw downtown revitalization, economic development, and clean air initiatives. He served from 2010 to 2017 in that role.

Prior political experience

Curtis won a special election on November 7, 2017, to replace Jason Chaffetz in the U.S. House, defeating Democrat Kathie Allen. He was reelected three times to the House. In 2024, he ran for U.S. Senate, defeating Republican primary opponents Brad Wilson and Trent Staggs, then defeating Democrat Caroline Gleich in the general election with 62.6% of the vote, succeeding Mitt Romney.
