Biography
Overview
John W. Mannion is a Democrat representing New York's 22nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. A former high school biology teacher and New York State Senator, Mannion was first elected to Congress in 2024, defeating incumbent Republican Brandon Williams. He is known for his background in education and commitment to workforce development and student protections.
Career
In the New York State Senate (2020-2024), Mannion chaired the Committee on Disabilities and served on six other committees focused on education, housing, and technology. He made history as the first Democrat elected to the 50th Senate district in over 50 years. He won a contentious 2022 re-election that was decided by only 10 votes after a recount. Since joining Congress in 2025, Mannion has introduced bills focused on education access, rural broadband, workforce development, and student protections for disabled individuals.
Prior political experience
Mannion was elected to the New York State Senate in 2020 with 52.57% of the vote, defeating Republican Angi Renna in a historically Republican district. He survived a razor-thin 2022 re-election, winning by only 10 votes after a recount—the closest race in that year's New York State Senate elections. In 2024, Mannion ran for Congress, winning the Democratic primary against Sarah Klee Hood and defeating incumbent Republican Brandon Williams in the general election for New York's 22nd congressional district.
