Biography

Overview

Jon Husted is a Republican U.S. Senator from Ohio serving since January 2025. Appointed by Governor Mike DeWine to fill the seat vacated by JD Vance, Husted previously served as Ohio's lieutenant governor (2019-2025) and secretary of state (2011-2019). He also served in the Ohio House of Representatives (2001-2009) and Ohio Senate (2009-2011), including as Speaker of the House. He is running in a November 2026 special election to complete Vance's term.

Career

As Ohio Secretary of State, Husted reduced the office budget by $14.5 million and cut staff by approximately one-third while maintaining a surplus. He standardized early voting hours statewide and implemented voter roll maintenance practices upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in Husted v. Randolph Institute. As senator, he successfully sponsored a Congressional Review Act resolution to repeal a 2024 Biden administration energy efficiency rule for household appliances, which passed both chambers and was signed into law in May 2025.

Prior political experience

Husted was first elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 2000, defeating his closest opponent in a five-way race by more than 12 percentage points. He was elected Ohio Secretary of State in 2010 with a nearly 500,000-vote victory over Democrat Maryellen O'Shaughnessy, and reelected in 2014 with a margin exceeding 700,000 votes over Democrat Nina Turner. He did not run for statewide office in 2018, instead joining Mike DeWine's successful gubernatorial ticket as lieutenant governor, winning in 2018 and reelected in 2022. He was appointed to the U.S. Senate on January 17, 2025, and is a candidate in the November 2026 special election.
