Biography

Overview

Jon Ossoff is a Democratic U.S. Senator from Georgia, first elected in a January 2021 runoff at age 33. He is the youngest incumbent senator and the first millennial to serve in the chamber. Before his 2020 Senate campaign, Ossoff was an investigative filmmaker and worked as a national security staffer for Representative Hank Johnson. He previously ran for Georgia's 6th congressional district in 2017, narrowly losing to Republican Karen Handel.

Career

Ossoff successfully advocated for Morris Brown College's reaccreditation in 2022 after personally petitioning the Secretary of Education. He blocked a proposed titanium mine in the Okefenokee Swamp in 2022 after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service warned of environmental damage. He introduced legislation to ban congressional stock trading in January 2022. As part of a bipartisan Senate delegation, he visited China in October 2023 to meet with Chinese leadership including General Secretary Xi Jinping.

Prior political experience

Ossoff first ran for Congress in a special election for Georgia's 6th congressional district on April 18, 2017, finishing first with 48.1% of the vote but falling short of the 50% needed to avoid a runoff. In the June 20, 2017 runoff, he lost to Republican Karen Handel by 9,282 votes. In the 2020 Senate primary on June 10, he won 53% of the vote to face incumbent Republican David Perdue. In the November 3, 2020 general election, Perdue received 49.73% and Ossoff received 47.95%, forcing a runoff. On January 5, 2021, Ossoff defeated Perdue in the runoff with approximately a 55,000-vote margin statewide, winning decisively in the Atlanta metropolitan area, particularly Cobb County (40,200+ vote margin) and Gwinnett County (74,200+ vote margin). He was sworn in on January 20, 2021, and is currently running for re-election in 2026.
