Biography

Overview

Jonathan L. Jackson is a Democratic U.S. Representative for Illinois's 1st congressional district, serving since 2023. Son of civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson, he previously worked as an investment analyst, business professor, and national spokesman for the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. He holds an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.

Career

Before entering Congress, Jackson championed criminal justice reform, highlighting cases of wrongful convictions and police torture. He successfully advocated for schools like Guggenheim Elementary to avoid closure. In Congress, he has sponsored bills addressing international security concerns, including the RSF Terrorist Designation Act and the Marshall 'Major' Taylor Congressional Gold Medal Act, reflecting his focus on both foreign policy and recognizing civil rights figures.

Prior political experience

Jackson first ran for Illinois's 1st congressional district in 2022 after incumbent Bobby Rush announced his retirement. He won the Democratic primary with approximately 30% of the vote in a crowded field, then won the general election in this heavily Democratic district. In 2024, he ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and defeated Republican Marcus Lewis in the general election with 65.8% of the vote.
