Overview

Josh Brecheen is a Republican U.S. Representative from Oklahoma's 2nd congressional district, serving since 2023. A citizen of the Choctaw Nation, he previously served in the Oklahoma Senate from 2010 to 2018. He is a graduate of Oklahoma State University with degrees in animal science and agricultural communications, and owns a motivational speaking business and a small trucking and excavation company.

Career

In the Oklahoma Senate (2010–2018), Brecheen filed bills to repeal the Pet Breeders Act and cut state spending on arts programs, and introduced education legislation on evolution. He was elected to Congress in 2022 in a competitive primary runoff, narrowly defeating Avery Frix. Early legislative efforts include the Patriotism Not Pride Act (restricting federal funding for Pride events) and bills on federal transparency, energy policy, and social welfare reform. He is a member of the Freedom Caucus and has been a cosponsor of immigration and religious ideology restriction measures.

Prior political experience

Brecheen was first elected to the Oklahoma State Senate in 2010, running unopposed in the Republican primary and defeating incumbent Democrat Jay Paul Gumm in the general election. In 2022, he advanced through a 14-candidate Republican primary, placing second before winning a runoff against state Representative Avery Frix and then defeating Democratic nominee Naomi Andrews in the general election for Oklahoma's 2nd congressional district. In 2024, he ran unopposed in the Republican primary. He has filed for reelection in 2026.
