Biography
Overview
Josh Hawley is a Republican U.S. Senator from Missouri, serving since 2019. Born in Arkansas in 1979, he earned degrees from Stanford University and Yale Law School. Before his Senate election, Hawley served as Missouri's attorney general from 2017 to 2019, where he pursued high-profile lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies and investigations into tech companies' data practices. He defeated Democrat Claire McCaskill in 2018 and was reelected in 2024. Hawley is known for a conservative and populist approach to politics.
Career
As Missouri attorney general, Hawley launched lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies over the opioid crisis, investigated tech giants Google and Facebook for data practices, and oversaw a statewide audit revealing nearly 5,000 untested rape kits. In the Senate, Hawley has blocked numerous presidential appointees, particularly during the Biden administration. He was the first senator to announce intent to object to certification of the 2020 election results, championing claims about election integrity. He has advocated for increased coronavirus relief payments and opposed the Afghanistan withdrawal and large Ukraine aid packages.
Prior political experience
Hawley was first elected to statewide office in August 2016, defeating Republican primary opponent Kurt Schaefer with 64% of the vote before winning the general election for Missouri attorney general with 58.5% against Democrat Teresa Hensley. In his 2018 U.S. Senate race, Hawley defeated two-term incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill with 51% of the vote to 46%. He was reelected to a second Senate term in November 2024, defeating Democratic nominee Lucas Kunce, a U.S. Marine veteran.
