Biography

Overview

Judy Chu is a Democratic U.S. Representative from California's 28th congressional district, serving since 2009. She is the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress. Before her federal service, Chu served in the California State Assembly and was elected to the California Board of Equalization in 2007. She also served on the Monterey Park City Council, including three terms as mayor.

Career

Chu has sponsored multiple bills addressing healthcare access, education, and social services. She is vice-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. She opposed the overturning of Roe v. Wade and voted against sending additional military aid to Israel in 2024, citing concerns about civilian casualties in Gaza. She was formally reprimanded by the House Ethics Committee in 2014 for interfering with an investigation into her office's campaign activities.

Prior political experience

Chu was first elected in a 2009 special election runoff for California's 32nd congressional district, defeating Republican Betty Chu 62%-33%. She was reelected in 2010 with 71% of the vote. Following redistricting, she ran in the 27th district and won with 64% in 2012. She has been consistently reelected, winning her most recent general election in 2020 with 69.8% against Republican Johnny J. Nalbandian. Her districts have consistently favored Democrats.
