Overview

Julia Brownley is a Democrat representing California's 26th congressional district since 2013. Before her congressional career, she served in the California State Assembly from 2006 to 2012 and worked in marketing and sales. She holds a bachelor's degree in political science and an MBA. She has announced she will not seek reelection and plans to retire in 2027.

Career

In the California State Assembly, Brownley authored a bill to ban plastic shopping bags (which did not pass) and served as chair of the Education Committee. In Congress, she has been reelected multiple times in a competitive district. She has championed legislation supporting alternative proteins research, veterans' benefits expansion, and gun safety measures. She has advocated for increased insurance regulation, job training funds, and public education funding.

Prior political experience

Brownley first won election to Congress in 2012, defeating Republican Tony Strickland 53%-47%. She was narrowly reelected in 2014 over Republican Jeff Gorell with 51%-49%, making it a competitive race. In 2020, she received 208,856 votes (60.6%). She was endorsed by Emily's List and Planned Parenthood in her 2012 race and by the League of Conservation Voters during her state assembly tenure. She has announced she will not seek reelection in 2026.
