Biography
Overview
Julia Letlow is a Republican U.S. representative from Louisiana's 5th congressional district, serving since 2021. She is the first Republican woman to represent Louisiana in the U.S. House. Letlow holds a Ph.D. in communications from the University of South Florida and previously worked in higher education and medical administration at Tulane University and the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Career
Letlow's major legislative achievement is the Parents Bill of Rights Act (H.R. 5), which passed the House in March 2023 with a vote of 213-208. The bill increased parental oversight of school curricula, library materials, and student medical exams. She has also sponsored bills supporting farmers (Farm Rescue Act of 2025, Drought Assistance Improvement Act), rural broadband infrastructure, and charter school educators. She co-led the bipartisan BUILD Act of 2025 for small law enforcement and fire department infrastructure.
Prior political experience
Letlow won a special election in March 2021 with over 64% of the vote in a nonpartisan blanket primary, becoming the first Republican woman elected to Congress from Louisiana. She won reelection in 2022 with 67% of the vote against three opponents and in 2024 with 62.9% of the vote against two opponents. In January 2026, she announced a Senate campaign challenging Republican incumbent Bill Cassidy in the primary.
