Biography
Overview
Ken Calvert is a Republican U.S. Representative from California's 41st congressional district, serving since 1993. Born in 1953 in Corona, California, he is a businessman with degrees from Chaffey Community College and San Diego State University. He previously worked in the restaurant and real estate industries before entering Congress.
Career
Calvert's major legislative achievements include authoring the E-Verify employment verification system, which now serves over 100,000 employers nationwide. He secured passage of the Distinguished Flying Cross National Memorial Act and the NASA Authorization Act of 2005. In 2025, he worked with California Governor Gavin Newsom to secure wildfire aid following the January 2025 Southern California wildfires. He has been reelected 17 times since 1992.
Prior political experience
Calvert was first elected in 1992 with 47% of the vote, defeating Democrat Mark Takano by 519 votes. He has won every general election since, including victories in 2020 with 57.1% of the vote and in 2022 and 2024 against Democrat Will Rollins. He narrowly lost a Republican primary in 1982 before his House career began.
