Biography
Overview
Kim Schrier is a Democrat representing Washington's 8th congressional district since 2019. She is a former pediatrician who worked at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Issaquah, Washington. Her district includes suburbs east of Seattle, extends across the Cascade Range to rural areas in central Washington, and includes the cities of Wenatchee and Ellensburg. She entered politics in 2017 after becoming dissatisfied with her predecessor's handling of healthcare legislation.
Career
Schrier won her 2018 election with 52% of the vote in a district where no Democrat had previously been elected, defeating Republican Dino Rossi. She was reelected in 2020 with 51.7% of the vote, in 2022 with 53.3% of the vote, and in 2024 with 54% of the vote. Her legislative focus has included healthcare expansion and protection of the Affordable Care Act. In 2025, she was one of 46 House Democrats who voted with Republicans on the Laken Riley Act.
Prior political experience
Schrier was first elected in 2018 with 52% of the vote, defeating Republican Dino Rossi in a race that attracted $25 million in spending—the most expensive in Washington state history at that time. She advanced from the primary by narrowly defeating attorney Jason Rittereiser. She was reelected in 2020 with 51.7% of the vote against Republican Jesse Jensen. In 2022, she defeated Republican Matt Larkin with 53.3% of the vote in a highly competitive race. In 2024, she won reelection with 54% of the vote against Republican Carmen Goers.
