Overview
LaMonica McIver is a Democratic U.S. Representative from New Jersey's 10th congressional district, serving since 2024. She was first elected in a September 2024 special election following the death of Donald Payne Jr. and won her first full term in November 2024. Before Congress, McIver served on the Newark municipal council from 2018 to 2024, including as council president from 2022 to 2024. She is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
Career
McIver was first elected to Congress in September 2024 and sworn in on September 23, 2024, winning her first full term in November 2024. Before entering Congress, she worked in education and public affairs, co-founded a non-profit focused on leadership development for young women and girls, and served on Newark's municipal council where she became president. She is currently facing federal charges related to an immigration detention facility oversight visit in May 2025, which she disputes as political in nature.

McIver was first elected to Congress in a September 2024 special election to succeed Donald Payne Jr., who died in office in April 2024. She won the Democratic primary in July 2024 and the general election in September 2024. She was sworn in on September 23, 2024, and subsequently won her first full term in the November 5, 2024, general election.
