Biography
Overview
Laura Friedman is a Democrat representing California's 30th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. First elected in 2024, she previously served in the California State Assembly (2016–2024) and as a Glendale City Council member and mayor. Before entering politics, she worked in film and television production and currently owns an art glass business. She is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
Career
In the California State Assembly, Friedman authored the 2019 fur sales ban (first in the nation) and co-authored the 2024 octopus farming prohibition. She also authored legislation eliminating minimum parking requirements for housing near mass transit, signed into law in 2022. In Congress, she has focused on transportation safety, affordable transit, wildfire relief, and housing policy.
Prior political experience
Friedman was first elected to the U.S. House in 2024, winning California's 30th congressional district with 68.4% of the vote. In her prior state assembly races, she won re-election in 2022 with 113,380 votes (71.4%) and in 2020 with 149,214 votes (69.6%).
