Biography
Overview
Laura Gillen is a Democratic U.S. Representative from New York's 4th congressional district, serving since 2025. She represents central and southern Nassau County on Long Island. Previously, she served as Hempstead Town Supervisor and worked as an attorney in commercial litigation and at law firms in the New York area.
Career
Gillen flipped her district from Republican to Democratic in 2024, defeating incumbent Anthony D'Esposito. As Hempstead Town Supervisor from 2017 to 2019, she released a capital plan that included $160 million in highway spending and facility improvements. She has been notably independent, declining to support a fellow Democratic mayoral candidate and voting with Republicans on immigration enforcement. She sponsored bills addressing rail safety, aviation weather, car seat requirements, and youth suicide prevention.
Prior political experience
Gillen ran for New York's 4th congressional district in 2022 and lost to Republican Anthony D'Esposito. She ran again in 2024 and defeated D'Esposito, flipping the seat to Democratic control. She is currently serving her first term in the House.
