Biography
Overview
Lois Frankel is a Democrat representing Florida's 22nd congressional district since 2023, and previously served the 21st district from 2017 to 2023. A lawyer and former mayor of West Palm Beach (2003-2011), she served 14 years in the Florida House of Representatives, where she became the first female House Minority Leader in Florida's history. She was first elected to Congress in 2012.
Career
In the Florida House, Frankel co-authored a change to Florida's AIDS omnibus law and chaired committees on the AIDS Task Force and Child Abuse & Neglect. As West Palm Beach mayor, she served two terms before leaving due to term limits. In Congress, she has sponsored bills on student safety, veteran education, and global health. She chairs the Elect Democratic Women PAC and has supported measures on gun control, women's health, and international relations.
Prior political experience
Frankel first ran for Congress in 1992, losing a Democratic primary runoff to Alcee Hastings 57%-43%. She was elected to the U.S. House in 2012, defeating Republican Adam Hasner 54.7%-45.3%. She has won reelection multiple times: in 2014 with 58% of the vote, in 2016 with 63% of the vote, unopposed in 2018, in 2020 with 86% in the primary, in 2022 with 55% against Dan Franzese, and in 2024 defeating Franzese again by 10 points.
