Biography
Overview
Lucy McBath is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Georgia serving District 6 since 2019 (with a 2023–2025 stint in District 7). She is known for her gun control advocacy following her son's 2012 murder and her work on education, workforce development, and criminal justice issues. McBath is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and serves on the House Judiciary Committee.
Career
McBath has become the first Democrat to represent Georgia's 6th district since it moved to Atlanta's northern suburbs in 1993. She co-sponsored the Honoring American Veterans in Extreme Need Act and legislation extending Pell Grant eligibility to students whose schools closed or engaged in misconduct. She voted for articles of impeachment against Trump in December 2019 and has championed multiple bills addressing gun violence, education access, and family services, though most remain in committee.
Prior political experience
McBath was first elected to Congress in 2018, narrowly defeating Republican incumbent Karen Handel with 159,268 votes to Handel's 156,396—a margin of about 2,900 votes representing victory in what was described as "the biggest Georgia Democratic upset of the 2018 midterms." She was re-elected in 2020 with 54.6% of the vote in a rematch against Handel. Following redistricting in 2022 that made her original district heavily Republican, McBath switched to Georgia's 7th district, where she defeated incumbent Democrat Carolyn Bourdeaux in the primary and won the general election in 2022. She currently represents the 6th district again following 2024 redistricting.
