Biography
Overview
Madeleine Dean is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania's 4th congressional district, serving since 2019. The district includes most of Montgomery County, a suburban area north of Philadelphia, and part of Berks County. Before her election to Congress, Dean was a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives representing the 153rd district. She is a lawyer and former educator who taught English and ethics at La Salle University for 10 years.
Career
Dean was named an impeachment manager in the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump in January 2021. She co-founded the PA SAFE Caucus focused on gun violence prevention. She was appointed to the Governor's Commission for Women in 2015 and elected chair of the Southeast Delegation of the Pennsylvania House Democrats in 2017. She investigated the attempted assassination of Donald Trump as part of a bipartisan task force in 2024.
Prior political experience
Dean was first elected to Congress in 2018, winning the Democratic primary with about 48% of the vote against two challengers. In the general election, she defeated Republican Dan David with 63.45% to 36.55%. She was reelected in 2020 with 59.5% of the vote against Republican Kathy Barnette's 40.5%. In 2022, she won reelection with 61.3% of the vote against Republican Christian Nascimento.
