Overview

Maggie Hassan is a Democratic U.S. Senator from New Hampshire, serving since 2017. She previously served as New Hampshire's governor from 2013 to 2017. An attorney by training, Hassan earned her J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law and worked at law firms before entering state politics. She was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016 by defeating Republican incumbent Kelly Ayotte by approximately 1,000 votes, and was reelected in 2022 with 54% of the vote.

Career

As governor, Hassan signed legislation legalizing medical cannabis and created a state sea level rise commission. In the state senate, she played a major role in legalizing same-sex marriage in New Hampshire. As a U.S. senator, Hassan participated in a bipartisan COVID-19 task force and has been named one of the most bipartisan members of Congress, ranking third among senators for bipartisanship. She authored multiple bills spanning healthcare access, retirement security, and national security.

Prior political experience

Hassan was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016, narrowly defeating Republican incumbent Kelly Ayotte by approximately 1,000 votes (0.1% margin). She was reelected in 2022, defeating Republican Don Bolduc with 54% of the vote to his 44%. Prior to her Senate elections, Hassan served in the New Hampshire state senate from 2005 to 2010 and as governor from 2013 to 2017. Her 2016 Senate victory was considered one of the most competitive races of that year.
