Biography

Overview

Mariannette Miller-Meeks is a Republican U.S. Representative from Iowa's 1st District, serving since 2021. A physician and ophthalmologist by training, Miller-Meeks enlisted in the Army at 18 as a nurse and later became a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve. She operated a private ophthalmology practice in Ottumwa and served as the first female president of the Iowa Medical Society before winning election to the Iowa Senate in 2018. She is known as a member of the moderate Republican Governance Group.

Career

Miller-Meeks has focused on healthcare and veterans' policy since entering Congress. She sponsored the Fisher House Availability Act (reported from committee), addressing housing for military families. She led efforts to extend tax breaks for small businesses in 2025. On contentious votes, she demonstrated independence by supporting the January 6 commission investigation (2021) and voting for same-sex marriage protections (2022). Earlier in her career, she served as Iowa's Director of Public Health under Governor Terry Branstad from 2010 to 2013.

Prior political experience

Miller-Meeks ran unsuccessfully for U.S. House in 2008, 2010, and 2014, each time losing to Dave Loebsack. In 2020, she won her first House race by an extremely narrow margin of 6 votes (0.002%) over Democrat Rita Hart. Hart challenged the result through House procedures, but withdrew her challenge in March 2021. Miller-Meeks was reelected in 2022 by a 6-point margin (53% to 47%) over Christina Bohannan, and reelected in 2024 by less than 1 percentage point (799 votes) in another close race against Bohannan. She was first elected to the Iowa State Senate in 2018, defeating Democrat Mary Stewart. In 2026, she faces a Republican primary challenge from David Pautsch and a potential third general election matchup with Christina Bohannan.
