Biography
Overview
Marilyn Strickland is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Washington's 10th congressional district, serving since January 2021. She previously served as the 38th mayor of Tacoma from 2010 to 2018. Born in Seoul, South Korea, she is the first African-American member of Congress elected from Washington and one of the first three Korean-American women elected to Congress.
Career
As mayor of Tacoma, Strickland was the first Asian-born elected mayor and first African-American woman in that office. She attracted foreign investment and facilitated a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping. In Congress, she has sponsored bills focused on military family support, agricultural infrastructure, transportation, and reproductive health access for service members and their families.
Prior political experience
Strickland was first elected to Congress in 2020. She placed first in an August 4 jungle primary with 19 candidates and defeated Democratic state representative Beth Doglio in the November general election to represent Washington's 10th congressional district.
