Biography

Overview

Mark Amodei is a Republican U.S. Representative from Nevada's 2nd district, serving since 2011. A lawyer and former Nevada state legislator, Amodei previously served in the Nevada Assembly (1997-1999) and Nevada Senate (1999-2011). He is the dean of Nevada's congressional delegation and a member of the moderate Republican Governance Group. In February 2026, Amodei announced he would not seek re-election.

Career

In the Nevada Legislature, Amodei was named Outstanding Freshman Legislator in 1997, served as Senate president pro tempore (2003-2008), and supported pragmatic positions including tax increases and expanded collective bargaining rights. In Congress, he has focused on Nevada land conservation, veterans' benefits, and airport infrastructure. Amodei broke ranks as the first House Republican calling for an impeachment inquiry in 2019 and has repeatedly opposed party hardline positions on deportations and tariffs. However, he has also drawn criticism for not holding open town halls since 2017 and for a 2025 amendment to sell or exchange Nevada public lands that drew rebuke from environmental groups and tribal governments.

Prior political experience

Amodei was first elected to Congress in a September 2011 special election, defeating Democrat Kate Marshall 58%-36%. He has won every subsequent general election by consistent margins: 2012 (58%-36%), 2014 (65.8%-27.9%), 2016 (58.3%-36.9%), 2018 (58.2%-41.8%), 2020 (56.5%-40.7%), 2022 (59.7%-37.8% after winning the primary with 54.9% against four challengers), and 2024 (55% against independent candidate Greg Kidd after winning the primary with 64%). He won every county in his district in the 2011 special election.
