Biography

Overview

Mark Kelly is a Democrat and senior U.S. senator from Arizona, serving since 2020. He is a retired Navy aviator and NASA astronaut who flew four Space Shuttle missions between 2001 and 2011. Kelly became politically active following the 2011 assassination attempt on his wife, former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords, and has focused on gun control advocacy and military-related policy.

Career

Kelly has championed bipartisan legislation on gun violence prevention, water rights for Native American tribes, and military family benefits. In the 117th Congress, he co-sponsored bills on law enforcement de-escalation training, ocean shipping governance, and human trafficking. In the 118th Congress, he co-sponsored the bipartisan END FENTANYL Act (2023). He also secured passage of three Indian water rights bills in January 2023, including agreements for the White Mountain Apache Tribe, Colorado River Indian Tribes, and Hualapai Tribe.

Prior political experience

Kelly was first elected in a 2020 special election triggered by John McCain's death, defeating Republican incumbent Martha McSally. This election marked the first Democratic win in Arizona's senior Senate seat since 1962. Kelly was reelected to a full term in 2022, defeating Republican Blake Masters by 125,719 votes.
