Biography
Overview
Michael Lawler is a Republican representing New York's 17th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2023. Born in 1986, he previously served in the New York State Assembly from 2021 to 2022. He earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting and finance from Manhattan College and worked in political communications before entering elective office.
Career
Lawler entered Congress in 2023 after defeating incumbent Sean Patrick Maloney in a narrow victory. He was reelected in 2024 with a margin of 23,946 votes over Democratic nominee Mondaire Jones. In his tenure, he has championed housing affordability legislation, co-sponsoring multiple housing-related bills. He opposed the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression Act and supported animal welfare protections. On immigration, he co-sponsored the DIGNIDAD Act providing a pathway to legal status paired with border enforcement, and voted to grant Temporary Protected Status to Haitian immigrants. He is a vocal supporter of increasing the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap from $10,000 to higher levels, a position that drew criticism from some party members but aligned with Trump's spending priorities.
Prior political experience
Lawler was first elected to Congress in November 2022, narrowly defeating incumbent Democratic Sean Patrick Maloney in New York's 17th congressional district. He was reelected in November 2024, defeating Democratic nominee Mondaire Jones by 23,946 votes. In July 2025, he announced his intention to seek reelection to the House in 2026 rather than pursue a race for New York governor, a position he had been considered for in 2024.
