Overview

Mike Crapo is a Republican U.S. senator from Idaho serving since 1999. Born in Idaho Falls in 1951, he is a graduate of Brigham Young University and Harvard Law School. Before his Senate career, he served in the Idaho State Senate (1984–1992) and the U.S. House (1993–1999). He is the senior senator from Idaho and dean of the state's congressional delegation. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Career

Crapo has focused on nuclear energy policy, helping develop the Nuclear Energy Innovation Capabilities Act and Nuclear Energy Innovation and Modernization Act, which established the National Reactor Innovation Center at Idaho National Laboratory. He sponsored the recent Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act, which became law. He advocates for early cancer detection and helped push for a federal Office of Men's Health following his own prostate cancer battle. He supports veterans' benefits, though he voted against the Honoring our PACT Act in 2022. He has opposed major Obama-era health care legislation and gun control measures.

Prior political experience

Crapo was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998, succeeding retiring Republican Dirk Kempthorne. He has been reelected four times. In 2004, he won reelection with 99.2% of the vote (with 0.8% going to a write-in Democratic candidate). In 2010, he won with 71% against Democratic nominee P. Tom Sullivan. In 2016, he won with 66% against Democratic nominee Jerry Sturgill. In 2022, he was reelected with 61% of the vote. Before the Senate, he served three terms in the U.S. House (1993–1999), representing Idaho's 2nd congressional district, and served in the Idaho State Senate (1984–1992).
