Biography
Overview
Mike Quigley is a Democrat serving as the U.S. Representative for Illinois's 5th congressional district since April 2009. He represents the North Side of Chicago and surrounding western suburbs. Before his congressional career, Quigley served as a Cook County Board Commissioner where he gained a reputation as a reformer challenging government inefficiency. He holds degrees from Roosevelt University, Loyola University Chicago School of Law, and the University of Chicago.
Career
Quigley authored the Federal Bird Safe Buildings Act, which he reintroduces each Congress to require federal buildings use bird-safe materials. As a Cook County commissioner, he opposed tax increases and challenged job-placement patronage practices. In Congress, he introduced the COVFEFE Act to preserve presidential social media posts. He sponsored gun control amendments including one to prevent weapon sales to people on the FBI's Terrorist Watch List. He has worked to improve veterans' healthcare and education access, and supports federal funding for family planning and reproductive health services.
Prior political experience
Quigley was first elected to Congress in a special election on April 7, 2009, winning with 69% of the vote after winning the Democratic primary with 22%. He was reelected in 2010 with 71% of the vote. In 2012, following redistricting, no Democrat filed to challenge him. In his most recent election cycles shown, he won with substantial margins. His district has been predominantly Democratic for all but three years since 1909.
