Biography

Overview

Nancy Mace is a Republican U.S. Representative from South Carolina's 1st congressional district, serving since 2021. She is the first Republican woman elected to Congress from South Carolina. Before her congressional service, she represented South Carolina's 99th House district from 2018 to 2020. Mace made history in 1999 as the first woman to graduate from the Citadel's Corps of Cadets program. She holds degrees in business administration from the Citadel and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Georgia. She is currently a candidate for South Carolina governor in 2026.

Career

Mace has championed legislation addressing rape-kit backlogs, birth control access, and animal welfare protections. In her South Carolina House tenure, she successfully advocated for rape and incest exceptions in a six-week abortion ban and secured passage of a prison reform bill ending the shackling of pregnant women. In Congress, she secured passage of the MACE Act on cybersecurity modernization in 2023. She has held high-profile hearings on UAPs as a subcommittee chair and has been vocal on veterans' issues, child safety, and animal protection. As a survivor of rape, she has made sexual assault victim support a recurring legislative focus.

Prior political experience

Mace was first elected to Congress in 2020, defeating incumbent Democrat Joe Cunningham in South Carolina's 1st district. She was re-elected in 2022, defeating Republican challenger Katie Arrington (who had Trump's endorsement) by winning the primary and then defeating Democrat Annie Andrews by 14 percentage points in the general election. Mace ran for a third term in 2024 and defeated Democratic candidate Michael B. Moore. Before Congress, she won a 2017 special election runoff for South Carolina House District 99 (63–37%) and was elected to that seat in the 2018 general election.
