Biography

Overview

Nancy Pelosi is a Democrat representing California's 11th congressional district (San Francisco) in the U.S. House of Representatives. First elected in 1987, she served as Speaker of the House from 2007–2011 and again from 2019–2023, making her the first woman to hold the position. She was the leader of House Democrats from 2003–2023. In November 2025, she announced she would retire in January 2027.

Career

Pelosi's legislative achievements include the Affordable Care Act (which she spearheaded), the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act. She co-authored the Ryan White CARE Act for HIV/AIDS services and helped shape the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act. She opposed the Iraq War and the proposed Social Security privatization under President Bush. During her second speakership, the House impeached President Trump twice. Scholars have called her tenure as speaker among the most effective in modern history.

Prior political experience

Pelosi was first elected to Congress in a special election in 1987 to succeed Sala Burton. She has been reelected 18 times without substantial opposition. In the 2020 Federal General Election, she received 281,776 votes (77.6% of the vote). She has not faced a serious Republican challenger since the early 1960s and won an average of 80% of the vote in her first seven reelection campaigns (1988–2004).
