Overview

Nick LaLota is a Republican U.S. Representative from New York's 1st congressional district, serving since 2023. A Naval Academy graduate and Navy veteran with eight years of service, LaLota is a member of the moderate Republican Governance Group. He represents Long Island and is known for supporting bipartisan initiatives.

Career

LaLota sponsored 20 recent bills, many honoring local veterans and military personnel with post offices and VA facilities. He championed the Long Island Sound Restoration Act and the Interstate Ferry Fairness Act, addressing regional concerns. He was an early Republican calling for an ethics investigation into George Santos in 2022 and supports centrist positions on immigration reform through the DIGNIDAD Act.

Prior political experience

LaLota was first elected in 2022, defeating Democratic nominee Bridget Fleming in New York's 1st congressional district to succeed Lee Zeldin. He was reelected in 2024, defeating Democratic nominee John Avlon. During the 2024 cycle, George Santos, his fellow Long Island Republican, challenged him in the primary but withdrew.
