Biography
Overview
Pete Aguilar is a Democrat representing California's 33rd congressional district since 2015. He is chair of the House Democratic Caucus (since 2023) and the highest-ranking Latino in Congress. Before his election to Congress, he served as mayor of Redlands, California from 2010 to 2014 and on the Redlands City Council starting in 2006. He is known for his focus on immigration, job creation, gun control, national security, and environmental protection.
Career
Aguilar has passed legislation with bipartisan support including the ADVANCE Act and OPPORTUNITY Act (both signed into law in 2018), which provide military service members with commercial driver's license training and connect students of color with cybersecurity programs. He was appointed to the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack and led a televised hearing on presidential pressure to overturn election results. He helped secure federal funding for communities recovering from the 2015 San Bernardino attack in his district.
Prior political experience
Aguilar first ran for Congress in 2012, finishing second in the primary. He ran again in 2013 and won the 2014 general election against Republican Paul Chabot with 51.4% of the vote. He defeated Chabot again in 2016 with 56.1%. In 2018, he won a competitive primary with 45.96% and the general election with 58.7%. He won his 2020 election with 61% of the vote (175,315 votes) against Republican Agnes Gibboney. After redistricting placed him in the new 33rd district, he won re-election in 2022. He was re-elected in 2024 with 57.4% against Republican Tom Hermon. He is currently serving his 6th term in Congress.
