Biography

Overview

Pete Stauber is a Republican U.S. Representative from Minnesota's 8th congressional district, serving since 2019. Before entering Congress, he was a retired law enforcement officer who served as a lieutenant in the Duluth Police Department from 1995 to 2017 and as a St. Louis County Commissioner from 2013 to 2019. He is a former college hockey player who helped lead Lake Superior State University to the 1988 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship.

Career

Stauber has championed mineral and mining policy, successfully passing the Critical Mineral Dominance Act through the House in 2023 (with a 212–203 vote) to end mineral withdrawal in Ely, Minnesota. He advocated for the Deb Haaland nomination opposition based on environmental concerns and has sponsored legislation on water stewardship, permitting reform, and border security. One of his bills, the Miracle on Ice Congressional Gold Medal Act, was enacted. He has also advocated for disability employment initiatives and received the Quincy Jones Exceptional Advocacy Award from the Global Down Syndrome Foundation in 2023.

Prior political experience

Stauber was first elected to Congress in 2018, defeating Democratic nominee Joe Radinovich and becoming only the second Republican to represent the district since 1947. He was reelected in 2020, defeating Quinn Nystrom and becoming the first Republican in 76 years to be reelected in the 8th district. He won again in 2022, defeating Jennifer Schultz, and in 2024 defeated Schultz in a rematch. The district has a working-class and mostly rural character.
