Overview

Raja Krishnamoorthi is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Illinois's 8th congressional district, serving since 2017. Born in New Delhi, India, and raised in Peoria, Illinois, he is an attorney who previously served as a special assistant attorney general. He is the first Indian American or person of South Asian descent to serve as a ranking member or chair of any full committee in the U.S. Congress.

Career

Krishnamoorthi has secured federal funding for local law enforcement mental health programs and helped pass career and technical education reforms. He led investigations into vaping marketing practices that prompted FDA action against e-cigarette manufacturers, investigated pandemic response failures, examined child car seat safety standards, and investigated sports team misconduct. He also advanced legislation addressing artificial intelligence export controls and semiconductor technology protection.

Prior political experience

Krishnamoorthi was first elected to the House in 2016, winning the primary with 57% of the vote and the general election with 58.1%. He ran unopposed for the 2018 Democratic nomination and won the general election with over 66% of the vote. In 2020, he received 80% of the Democratic primary vote and won the general election 73% to 26%. He won the 2022 Democratic nomination with 71% of the vote and was reelected by a 14-point margin. In 2024, he was unopposed in the Democratic primary and won the general election by a 14-point margin. He ran for the U.S. Senate in 2026 but lost the Democratic primary to Juliana Stratton.
