Prior political experience

Warnock won a 2020 special election runoff against Republican Kelly Loeffler on January 5, 2021, with 51.04% of the vote. He was reelected to a full six-year term on December 6, 2022, in a runoff against Republican Herschel Walker with 51.4% to 48.6%, making him the first Georgia Democrat to win reelection to the Senate since Sam Nunn in 1990 and the first Deep South Democrat to win reelection since Mary Landrieu of Louisiana in 2008. His victories were significant in giving Democrats a 50-50 Senate majority in 2021 with Vice President Kamala Harris as the tiebreaker.
