Overview

Richard Blumenthal is a Democratic U.S. senator from Connecticut, serving since 2011. Before entering the Senate, he served as Connecticut attorney general for 20 years (1991-2010), U.S. attorney for the District of Connecticut (1977-1981), and in the Connecticut General Assembly. He is a graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Yale Law Journal. Blumenthal served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve from 1970 to 1976, attaining the rank of sergeant.

Career

As Connecticut attorney general, Blumenthal led major enforcement actions including a 46-state tobacco lawsuit resulting in a $246 billion national settlement (Connecticut's share: $3.6 billion), an antitrust case against Microsoft, and efforts to shut down adult services sections on Craigslist. He also secured agreements from MySpace and Facebook to implement child safety measures. In the Senate, Blumenthal has sponsored legislation on veterans' healthcare, military family support, and consumer protection. He helped lead the Kids Online Safety Act in 2024 to address harms to children online.

Prior political experience

Blumenthal was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, defeating Republican Linda McMahon with 55% of the vote. He became Connecticut's senior senator in 2013 after Joe Lieberman retired. Blumenthal was reelected in 2016 and 2022.
