Overview

Rick Scott is a Republican U.S. Senator from Florida, serving since 2019. Born December 1, 1952, he previously served as Florida's 45th governor from 2011 to 2019. Scott is a Navy veteran, attorney, and businessman who co-founded Columbia Hospital Corporation. He became Florida's senior senator in 2025 when Marco Rubio resigned to become Secretary of State.

As governor, Scott led Florida through Hurricane Irma's mass evacuation and expanded school choice programs. He pursued job creation policies, with Florida adding nearly 1.5 million jobs during his tenure (20.3% employment growth vs. 12.5% nationally). Scott signed criminal justice reforms including Florida's death penalty overhaul and gun-related legislation, though some measures were struck down as unconstitutional. In the Senate, he has focused on defense, foreign policy toward China, and regulatory accountability.

Prior political experience

Scott won his 2018 U.S. Senate election against incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson in a close race that triggered a mandatory recount. He was reelected in 2024, defeating Democratic nominee Debbie Mucarsel-Powell by over 12 points. As governor, Scott won the 2010 election against Democrat Alex Sink by approximately 1.29% (around 68,000 votes) and was reelected in 2014 against former governor Charlie Crist, also by just over one point.
