Overview

Rick Allen is a Republican U.S. Representative from Georgia's 12th congressional district, serving since 2015. The Augusta-based businessman founded R.W. Allen and Associates, a construction company, in 1976 after graduating from Auburn University in 1973 with a degree in building construction. Allen is considered one of the wealthier members of Congress and won his first election by defeating longtime Blue Dog Democrat John Barrow in 2014 with 54.7% of the vote. He has been re-elected in each subsequent cycle with approximately 60% of the vote.

Career

Allen's legislative accomplishments center on economic and workforce development. He has introduced the Retire through Ownership Act to expand entrepreneurship resources, amendments to workforce innovation programs, and measures to regulate pharmacy benefit managers. He has supported major Republican economic initiatives including the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Allen opposed efforts to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and has been a vocal advocate for Israel during Gaza conflict debates. He voted to object to the 2020 presidential election certification and was one of 139 House Republicans to do so.

Prior political experience

Allen first ran in 2012 but lost a Republican primary runoff by 0.6 percentage points. In 2014, he self-funded nearly $1 million and won a five-way primary with 54% of the vote, then defeated incumbent Blue Dog Democrat John Barrow in the general with 54.7%. He was re-elected in 2016 with 61.6%, in 2018 with 59.5%, in 2020 with 58.4%, in 2022 with 59.6% (after receiving Trump's endorsement), and in 2024 with 60.3%. He ran unopposed by primary challengers in subsequent cycles. His district favors Republicans by 7 points according to the 2025 Cook Partisan Voting Index.
