Biography

Overview

Robert B. Aderholt is a Republican U.S. Representative from Alabama's 4th Congressional District, serving since 1997. A socially conservative member of the Tea Party Caucus and attorney, he represents the most Republican district in the country with an R+33 rating. He became the dean of Alabama's congressional delegation following Senator Richard Shelby's retirement.

Career

Aderholt won a closely contested 1996 race (50%-48%) against State Senator Bob Wilson Jr. to become only the second Republican to represent the district since Reconstruction. He has been reelected nine times and ran unopposed in 2004, 2010, 2014, and 2016. He secured $13.8 million in infrastructure funding for his district in 2023. Key legislative achievements include sponsoring the Interstate Recognition of Notarizations Act of 2010 (passed both chambers) and the Continuing Appropriations Act, 2012. He chairs the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee.

Prior political experience

Aderholt won his first election in 1996 with a narrow margin of 50%-48% against Democratic State Senator Bob Wilson Jr., a closely contested race receiving national media coverage. He was reelected in 1998 over Tom Bevill Jr., the former congressman's son. Since his first win, he has faced no competitive races and was reelected nine times, running unopposed in 2004, 2010, 2014, and 2016. His increasing margins reflected growing Republican support in the district.
