Overview

Robert Menendez Jr. is a Democrat serving New Jersey's 8th congressional district since 2023. A lawyer and former Port Authority of New York and New Jersey commissioner, he is the son of former U.S. Senator Bob Menendez and is Cuban-American through his father. He is a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and serves on several key committees focused on energy, communications, and environmental policy.

Career

Menendez was elected freshman representative on the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee in 2023 and serves as a Regional Whip. He was appointed vice chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's northeast region for 2026, helping lead Democratic efforts to regain House control. Within the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, he serves as vice chair of policy and finance co-chair for BOLD PAC. He has conducted congressional oversight of immigration detention facilities and initially voted against the George Santos expulsion before changing his position once ethics findings were released.

Prior political experience

Menendez won the 2022 Democratic primary with 83.6% of the vote and defeated Republican nominee Marcos Arroyo 73.6% to 23.4% in the general election. In 2024, he won the Democratic primary with 52.0% of the vote against challengers Ravinder Bhalla (37.5%) and Kyle Jasey (10.5%), then defeated Republican nominee Anthony Valdes 59.2% to 34.6% in the general election.
