Biography

Overview

Roger Marshall is a Republican U.S. Senator from Kansas serving since 2021. A physician trained as an obstetrician-gynecologist, Marshall previously served in the U.S. House representing Kansas's 1st congressional district from 2017 to 2021. He is known for his opposition to abortion, support for agriculture interests, skepticism of climate science, and alignment with Trump administration positions.

Career

Marshall's legislative work emphasizes rural and agricultural interests. In the House, he defeated incumbent Tim Huelskamp in 2016 with strong support from agricultural groups. In the Senate, he has championed the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act to limit state agricultural regulations, though it was not included in the final farm bill. He has also focused on healthcare access and physician reimbursement issues. Marshall opposed expansion of foreign aid and supported objections to the 2020 electoral count certification on January 6, 2021, though he ultimately accepted Biden's presidency and urged prosecution of Capitol rioters.

Prior political experience

Marshall was first elected to Congress in 2016, defeating incumbent Tim Huelskamp in the Republican primary 56% to 44%, then winning the general election with 65.9% of the vote in the heavily Republican Kansas 1st district. In 2020, he ran for Senate and won the Republican primary with 40.3% of the vote, beating Kris Kobach by 14.2 percentage points. He then defeated Democratic State Senator Barbara Bollier in the general election 53% to 42%, with Libertarian Jason Buckley receiving 5%. He was sworn into the Senate on January 3, 2021.
