Biography

Overview

Roger Williams is a Republican U.S. Representative from Texas's 25th congressional district, serving since 2013. He is a businessman who inherited his family's automobile dealership and previously served as Texas Secretary of State under Governor Rick Perry from 2004 to 2007.

Career

Williams has served seven terms in the House. His legislative focus centers on small business expansion and financial system deregulation. Notable controversies include a 2016 House Ethics Committee investigation into a transportation bill provision that would have benefited his auto dealership, and a 2021 ethics complaint regarding stock trading disclosures. His dealership received a Paycheck Protection Program loan of $1-2 million during COVID-19, which was later forgiven.

Prior political experience

Williams was first elected in 2012, winning a runoff against Republican Wes Riddle (58%-42%) before defeating Democrat Elaine Henderson in the general election (58%-37%). He has been reelected five times: 2014 (60% of vote, defeating Democrat Marco Montoya), 2016 (58% of vote, defeating Democrat Kathi Thomas), 2018 (54% of vote, defeating Democrat Julie Oliver), and 2020 (56% of vote, defeating Democrat Julie Oliver again). His margins of victory have remained consistently in the 54-60% range in general elections.
