Biography

Overview

Ron Johnson is a Republican U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, serving since 2011. Before his Senate career, he was CEO of Pacur, a plastics manufacturer in Oshkosh. Johnson was first elected to the Senate in 2010, defeating incumbent Democrat Russ Feingold with 51.9% of the vote. He was reelected in 2016 in a rematch against Feingold (50.2% vs. 46.8%) and again in 2022, narrowly defeating Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes (50% vs. 49%). Johnson entered politics opposing the Affordable Care Act and has been known for his focus on federal spending and the national debt.

Career

Johnson's major legislative focus has been opposing government spending and advocating for a balanced budget. He has stalled or voted against budget proposals from both parties that did not offset spending. He opposed the 2010 Affordable Care Act and continues to criticize it. Johnson led investigations as chair of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs into Hillary Clinton, Hunter Biden, and the FBI investigation of the Trump campaign. He voted to confirm three Supreme Court justices (Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett) and against Ketanji Brown Jackson's confirmation. Johnson has sponsored bills addressing pandemic preparedness, wildlife management, fentanyl, and regulatory matters. He delayed passage of the American Rescue Plan Act by forcing a full reading of its 628 pages.

Prior political experience

Johnson was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, defeating Democratic incumbent Russ Feingold with 51.9% of the vote. He was reelected in 2016 in a rematch against Feingold, winning with 50.2% to Feingold's 46.8%. Johnson faced strong polling predictions of defeat in 2016 and had low name recognition as an incumbent. In 2022, he was reelected with 50% of the vote, narrowly defeating Democratic Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes (49%). Johnson won the 2022 Republican primary with 84% of the vote. Notably, Johnson had previously pledged to serve only two terms but announced his 2022 candidacy, citing that "America is in peril."
