Biography

Overview

Rosa DeLauro is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Connecticut's 3rd congressional district, representing the New Haven area since 1991. She is the dean of Connecticut's congressional delegation and serves as Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee and the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee. She is a founding member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Career

DeLauro has authored and championed major legislation on food safety, including the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (enacted in 2011). Following the 2022 infant formula shortage, she proposed restructuring the FDA to create a separate Food Safety Administration. She has consistently advocated for worker rights, women's health, and family support policies. She successfully secured passage of anti-mink farming legislation as part of the America COMPETES Act (though the Senate did not pass it). She opposed the Stupak-Pitts Amendment limiting abortion funding and has supported abortion rights throughout her career.

Prior political experience

DeLauro was first elected to Congress in 1990, defeating Republican State Senator Thomas Scott with 52% of the vote in a competitive general election. She has since been reelected eighteen times, never receiving less than 56% of the vote. Her victory margins have consistently increased from her initial narrow win, reaching 77% in 2008. In her most recent election in 2024, she won with 58.9% of the vote against Michael Massey. She has been the dean of Connecticut's congressional delegation since 2013.
