Overview

Salud Carbajal is a Democratic U.S. Representative from California's 24th congressional district, serving since 2017. Born in Mexico and raised in Oxnard, California, Carbajal earned a bachelor's degree from UC Santa Barbara and a master's degree from Fielding Graduate University. He served eight years in the Marine Corps Reserve, including during the Gulf War, and previously served on the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors from 2004 to 2016.

Career

Carbajal has maintained electoral strength, winning reelection five times to the House with increasingly larger margins (from 53.4% in 2016 to 62.7% in 2024). Before Congress, he served three terms on the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors (2004–2016). In Congress, his legislative focus has centered on transportation, infrastructure, and veteran support, though many of his recent bills remain in committee.

Prior political experience

Carbajal was first elected to Congress in 2016 in an open primary and general election after incumbent Lois Capps announced her retirement. He received 31.9% in the primary and 53.4% in the general election against Republican Justin Fareed. He was reelected in 2018 with 58.6%, in 2020 with 58.7%, in 2022 with 60.6%, and in 2024 with 62.7%. He has not faced a challenger from his own party and has grown his vote share with each election cycle.
