Biography
Overview
Sarah Elfreth is a Democratic U.S. House representative from Maryland's 3rd congressional district, serving since January 2025. Born and raised in New Jersey, she earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Towson University and a master's degree in public policy from Johns Hopkins University. She previously served in the Maryland State Senate representing the 30th district from 2019 to 2025, where she was regarded as one of the most productive members, passing 84 bills during her tenure. She is the youngest woman ever elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland.
Career
During her Maryland Senate tenure, Elfreth passed 84 bills, more than any other state legislator during her time in office. Key legislative achievements include the Student and Military Voter Empowerment Act, Office of Digital Inclusion legislation, the Great Maryland Outdoors Act, the David Perez Military Heroes Act supporting psychedelic research for veterans with PTSD, and bills establishing a State Disaster Recovery Fund and requiring climate considerations in state pension investments. In Congress, she has introduced the Protect Our Probationary Employees Act and bills addressing cyber security education and domestic violence prevention.
Prior political experience
Elfreth was first elected to the Maryland State Senate in 2018, defeating Republican former state delegate Ron George with 53.8% of the vote. She was reelected in 2022. In 2024, she won the Democratic primary for Maryland's 3rd congressional district in a 22-way race and defeated Republican nominee Rob Steinberger in the general election on November 5, 2024. She was sworn into Congress on January 3, 2025. She is the youngest woman ever elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland.
