Overview
Sarah McBride is a Democratic U.S. Representative for Delaware's at-large congressional district, serving since 2025. She is the nation's highest-ranking openly transgender elected official and the first openly transgender member of the United States Congress. Before her election to Congress, McBride served in the Delaware Senate from 2021 to 2025, representing the state's 1st senate district. She is known for her work on LGBTQ rights advocacy and paid family and medical leave legislation.
Career
In the Delaware Senate, McBride successfully sponsored the Healthy Delaware Families Act, which provides workers with up to 12 weeks of paid family or medical leave at up to 80% of wages (maximum $900 per week). Prior to elected office, she led the lobbying effort for Delaware's 2013 gender identity non-discrimination law covering employment, housing, insurance, and public accommodations. She was the first openly transgender person to speak at a major party convention (Democratic National Convention, 2016) and the first openly transgender state senator elected in the United States (2020).
Prior political experience
McBride was first elected to the Delaware Senate in November 2020, becoming the first openly transgender state senator in U.S. history. She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2024 with 58% of the vote, after winning the Democratic primary on September 10, 2024 with 80% of votes. She officially became the first openly transgender member of the U.S. Congress on January 3, 2025.
