Overview

Scott Fitzgerald is a Republican who represents Wisconsin's 5th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. First elected to Congress in 2020, he previously served in the Wisconsin State Senate from 1995 to 2021, where he was elected majority leader by his Republican colleagues. Before his legislative career, Fitzgerald worked as a newspaper publisher and served 27 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Career

In the U.S. House, Fitzgerald has focused on deregulation and financial sector modernization. His notable bills include the Bank Competition Modernization Act, the Stopping Proxy Advisor Racketeering Act, and the Promoting Innovation in Blockchain Development Act. In his 26 years in the Wisconsin State Senate, he served as majority leader, managed the Joint Committee on Finance, and chaired the Corrections Committee. He was a key architect of Republican legislative priorities, including efforts to limit the incoming Democratic governor's powers in 2018.

Prior political experience

Fitzgerald was elected to Congress in 2020, winning the Republican primary for Wisconsin's 5th district with 77 percent of the vote. He was the only substantial candidate in the primary after the field was cleared for him. He represents a district that is the most Republican in Wisconsin. Fitzgerald entered the state legislature in 1994, unseating Republican incumbent Barbara Lorman in a three-way primary, and was reelected six times to the Wisconsin State Senate before joining Congress.
