Biography
Overview
Sharice Davids is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Kansas's 3rd congressional district since 2019. She is the first openly LGBT Native American elected to Congress, the first openly LGBT person elected to Congress from Kansas, and one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress (alongside Deb Haaland). She is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin and currently the only Democrat in Kansas's Republican-dominated congressional delegation. Davids is an attorney educated at Cornell Law School and was a professional mixed martial artist in the 2010s.
Career
Davids was the first Democrat to represent Kansas in the House since 2011 and became the first openly LGBT Native American elected to Congress. She was the only Kansas representative to vote to impeach President Donald Trump in December 2019. She successfully added an amendment to the America COMPETES Act of 2022 to include small and medium-sized manufacturers in a $500 million pilot program for personal protective equipment and medical supplies. She has been reelected four times (2018, 2020, 2022, 2024), defeating the same Republican opponent (Amanda Adkins) twice consecutively and winning over 53% of the vote in three consecutive election cycles.
Prior political experience
Davids was first elected in 2018, defeating Republican incumbent Kevin Yoder 53.6% to 43.9%. In the Democratic primary, she defeated Bernie Sanders-endorsed candidate Brent Welder 37% to 34%. She was reelected in 2020 unopposed in the Democratic primary with 74,437 votes and defeated Republican Amanda Adkins 53.6% to 43.6% in the general election. In 2022, following redistricting that made the district slightly more Republican-leaning, she defeated Adkins again 54.9% to 42.8% (with 2.3% for Libertarian Steve Hohe), representing a 2.1% improvement over her 2020 margin. In 2024, she won her fourth term by defeating Republican Prasanth Reddy 53.4% to 42.6%.
