Biography

Overview

Shomari Figures is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Alabama's 2nd congressional district, serving since January 3, 2025. An attorney and son of prominent civil rights figures, Figures was first elected in 2024 and became the first Democrat since 1963 to represent a significant portion of Mobile. He previously held roles in the Obama and Biden administrations, including deputy chief of staff to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Career

In his first year, Figures sponsored 15 bills focused on rural and family support. He championed the Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act, which passed overwhelmingly 399–5 to extend federal payments for rural schools and services. His legislative agenda prioritizes rural hospital funding, infrastructure modernization, family tax relief, and protecting rural institutions like land-grant universities.

Prior political experience

Figures was first elected in 2024 after a redraw of Alabama's congressional map ordered by the Supreme Court in Allen v. Milligan, creating a new majority-Black district. In the Democratic primary, he led an 11-candidate field with 44% of the vote, then defeated Anthony Daniels in an April runoff with 61% of the vote. He won the general election against Republican Caroleene Dobson and was sworn in on January 3, 2025.
