Biography
Overview
Shontel M. Brown is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Ohio's 11th congressional district, serving since 2021. She first entered Congress through a special election after Marcia Fudge resigned to become Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Brown previously served on Cuyahoga County Council and as chair of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party, making her the first woman and first African American to hold that position.
Career
Since entering Congress in 2021, Brown has championed food security, nutrition programs, and cybersecurity workforce development through sponsored legislation. She is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional Progressive Caucus, and Black Maternal Health Caucus. She supported the Build Back Better Act and voted for Israel aid following October 7.
Prior political experience
Brown first entered Congress through a special election on November 2, 2021, after winning the competitive Democratic primary on August 3, 2021. She was elected to the full term in the May 3, 2022 Democratic primary, defeating former State Senator Nina Turner. She was endorsed by President Joe Biden and the Congressional Progressive Caucus in 2022. She was re-elected in 2024.
